I'll be 18 on Election Day but I am not 18 yet. Can I still register to vote?
This is fully dependent on the state in which you live. In many states you are able to register prior to turning 18 if you will be of legal voting age by Election Day.
Can I register to vote without a driver's license?
If you do not have a state issued driver's license you can use a non-drivers state ID. If you do not have a drivers license or a non-driver state ID card, states will allow you to register to vote using the last four digits of your social security number (SSN). The following states require your full social security number in order to register: Hawaii, Kentucky, New Mexico, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia
How can I check if I'm registered to vote?
You can check your voter registration status with your state election site. You will need to provide some identifying information such as date of birth and the address, which you think you used to register in the past. The tool will confirm if you are in the system, need to change your address, or are not found to be registered.
What if I know I'm registered and my state check registration tool says I am not?
- There can be several reasons that the check my registration tool will say you are not registered:
- Reasons for this could be:
- You registered to vote recently
- The information you provided is incorrect
- You are registered at a pervious or different address
- You are not registered to vote
What if I'm registered and register again?
There is no penalty if you re register. You can register to vote here.
How do I know if my voter registration was submitted and accepted?
If your voter registration was submitted and accepted by your state you will receive a registration card in the mail to the address you provided.
What identification do I need in order to vote?
Half of the states accept only photo IDs. Acceptable forms include:
- Driver's licenses
- State-issued ID cards
- Military ID cards
Other states accept specific non-photo ID. These may include:
- Birth certificates
- Social Security cards
- Bank statements
- Utility bills
Every state has it's own requirements regarding proof of identification. Be sure you know the ID requirements of the state in which you will be voting before Election Day.
How long does it take for my voter registration to be processed?
Most states will process and send a voter registration cards within 5 to 7 weeks after you have submitted your voter registration. If you do not receive written confirmation you should be sure to verify your registration the week before voter registration deadline in your state.
Is it required that I pick a party when I register to vote?
It is not required that you select your party at the time that you register to vote. It is important to keep in mind that some states require you select a party in order to participate in that party's primary election. If you do not want to choose a party at the time of registration, enter "No party" on your voter registration form
How do I vote if I will be out of state on Election Day?
Most states will allow you to vote absentee ballot if you will be away from your state on Election Day. Depending on the duration of our absence, some states also offer in-person early voting leading up to the election.

Can I register to vote if I do not have an in-state driver's license, ID card, or the last 4 digits of my social security number?
All states require identification in order to register to vote. If you do not have any of the three above you should wait until you do or call your local election office for more information.
My drivers license is not from the state that I currently live and will be voting in. What identification should I use when registering to vote?
You should NOT use your license or identification card if it is not from the state in which you will be voting. In this case it is advised to use the last 4 digits of our social security number, except in HI, KY, NM, SC, TN, and VA, where you need to provide your full social security number.
What personal information do I need to have in order to register to vote?
In most states you need the following:
- The in state address of your residence
- Non-drivers identification card or drivers license from the state in which you will vote or your social security number
Can you vote if you have been convicted of a felony?
The rules regarding convicted felons and voting is different in every state. Maine and Vermont do not have restrictions on convicted felons voting where as 14 States will restore a felons right to vote upon release from jail. Other states restore the right to vote after a full sentence has been served. Check with your state to determine if you are eligible to vote.
How can you register to vote if you are homeless?
If you are homeless you can use the address of a shelter or other nonprofit for voter registration mailing address.
I am living abroad and don't have a permanent US address. How can I register to vote?
You can register to vote at the last address you had before you left the United States, or at the address to which you will return. There must be some proof of intent to return and reside there (e.g. vehicle registration, driver's license, property ownership, family, etc). You can also vote absentee via the overseas absentee registration.
I am unsure how to answer a question on the voter registration form. Should I guess?
You must complete all required fields on the voter registration form. Different states handle incomplete forms differently. All states require the information you provide is true and accurate. It has been recommended that if you are not sure of your answer that you indicate that next to the section on the form by writing "to the best of my knowledge".
Can I register to vote online?
Some states allow you to complete your full voter registration online if you have a driver's license or non-driver's ID card from the state in which you plan to vote. Other states require that you print out the voter registration form and send it to the state election office. I don't have a printer to print out the voter registration form. What should I do?
You will need to print the form. You can go to a public library and print the form or you can visit your local DMV or election office and get the preprinted form.
